My spiritual birthday!

As we were making our way home on Monday it dawned on me that it was my spiritual birthday that is. When I was a little girl I asked my mom how to get to heaven. She took me by the hand and led me into our kitchen and proceeded to tell me about Jesus and how he came to save the world. She told me that the only way to heaven was through Jesus and that I just had to believe that he came, died for my sins and arose from the grave.

Right then and there at that old farmhouse table I asked Jesus to forgive me and to come into my heart. I remember like it was yesterday, my mom telling me that the angels in heaven were rejoicing over ME and writing MY name down in the Lamb's book of Life. My tender young heart felt forgiven and clean. We wrote it all down on a piece of paper...the scripture, my age and the date. That piece of paper is yellowed with age and has a million little pin hole marks in it, but it is a reminder to me of that special I will never forget. The most important decision I ever made and at the age of 6! What about you have a turning point in your faith walk that you'll never forget??

Have a blessed day.

  1. Happy Birthday, Becky!!! Isn't the Lord amazing?! We've been Christian sisters for 30 years!!! Yeah!!!!

God bless you, Becky, and the lives you touch through your life and your blog!!!

  2. Happy Birthday!! My spiritual birthday is January 23rd, 2003. A bit of a late bloomer, but better late than never!! : ) I had a great experience just the other day. I was reading in a parenting magazine about how important it is to put an emphasis on forgiveness when disciplining our kids so that we are modeling Christ's forgiveness. It dawned on me that I have hung onto guilt and shame associated with sins; somehow thinking that feeling miserable for the rest of my life for these mistakes was my punishment. I love it when the Lord makes things "click" like that. I literally felt set free when I read this article.
I found your blog a few months or so ago via the Farm Chicks. I really enjoy it! I appreciate how down to earth and real you are and look forward to reading your updates.
Wishing you and yours a blessed New Year!!

  3. I'm so glad you shared that! I love it! And I love how it is written down with your cute little picture:)!!!

  4. Happy Spiritual Birthday, Becky! I love this post! Mine is October 26, 1996. I was 20 (yep, totally giving my away my age) A junior in college, in a self made pit of my choosing, and totally needed a rescue. A glorious rescue indeed! I absolutely love that you have something tangible to look back on. The friend who led me to the Lord gave me a bible with his name on it which I still have to remember how he and so many others prayed for my salvation.
Thank you so much for sharing such a special day with all of us!

  5. I don't know you, but I just cried reading your post. What a blessing to grow up knowing Jesus. A turning point in faith? My faith was dashed when God chose not to heal my mom of cancer. But looking back, I see how God gave me the "peace that surpasses all understanding". The verse truly came alive to me, how could you have peace during death? But our soveriegn God did it!

  6. What a special birthday! I confessed Jesus was Lord and asked him to come into my heart on the day I was baptized with Him on September 10th, 1985. I always thought it was September 11th but I remember that it was a Tuesday because a dear friend from church bought me a neat figuring about "Tuesday's child."

My daddy was the preacher of that small town church and I remember calling a few friends and family to come meet us at the sanctuary that evening to celebrate as we participated in the act of burial symbolism -- dying to my old life and being raised to walk in Him. We had talked about Christianity my whole life with evening in-home devotionals and of course in church at least three times a week. However, I specifically remember my mother telling me that choosing to follow Christ was like continual windshield wipers washing away my sins and offering me grace when I failed. We have some beautiful pictures of the evening that I'll post on my blog one of these days.

Thanks for encouraging my walk down memory lane. I was only 11 years old at the time. Though I didn't completely understood all of the implications of my actions, I knew enough to understood that my life would forever be changed.

  7. What a sweet little soul you are! I too in second grade asked lots of questions..who made God etc. I have been touched since I was a child too. I remember praying over my baby lamp that couldn't walk...the next morning it was walking. As a young 20 something..I couldn't get pregnant, for years, I struggled with God..I learned to trust lessons I ever learned. Even now, I have the faith of a child, I KNOW that my prayers are heard and answered. Love you! :D

  8. I don't remember the date, but I was 8 yrs old. However, my son just celebrated his 1st spiritual birthday in November. He was baptized this past Nov. 8, exactly 1 yr and 6 days after inviting Jesus into his heart. That is our biggest event of 2009 - watching my son being baptized. I am getting teary-eyed just writing about it now. Happy New Year and Happy Birthday in Christ!

  9. Becky, thank you for taking the time to post a comment on my blog post. What study are you doing?

This post is beautiful! I think you already said to me that our testimonies were so similar. Mine is my sidebar on my blog.
Happy Spiritual Birthday, blog anniversary again, and New Year!

  10. Happy Spiritual Birthday, Becky! I love that you have everything written down. Sooooo precious.

Have a wonderful, wonderfully blessed New Year!

  11. March 24th. I was 17 - almost 6 years ago. I needed a Father so I accepted God as my only Father alone in my room with just my thoughts. Then I got to know His son Jesus and all what the Father gave me through His Son's death and resurrection. I am saved. We all have 2 birthdays! Isn't that fun? :)))

  12. Happy Birthday! Ahh what a touching story, thank you for sharing it. I grew up going to Catholic schools and church on Sunday but when I went on a retreat in college it was life changing... i cried for 3 days straight i felt God by myside.
Wishing you a happy New Year!!!

  13. Praise the Lord for godly mothers! My mother, too, led me to the Lord.

I came home from church, and could not sleep during nap time. I went down stairs, and asked my mom to explain to me the salvation plan I had heard so much a church and from my parents.

She opened her bible, on that couch, and shared Christ's plan of Salvation with me!

I am a work in progress, to this day. Thank goodness for his GRACE and MERCY!

PS: come check out my 6 month challenge over at my health blog:

  14. I'm so jealous you have a spiritual birthday! I don't have one, I can't remember, but am so grateful to be celebrating yours with you!

  15. Becky, what a special story, and a special day! I don't know the exact day, but it was in August, 1967 and I was 15. My small country church was having a week long revival, and my dad was on the road and my mom couldn't come because we had a horse about to foal. She drove my grandmother and me to the church and promised to come get us after the service. It was a hot, clammy, stormy, very rainy night, you know - one of those nights when your clothes clinged to you and you felt dirty. I stood at my pew, singing the invitation along with the rest of the congregation. And suddenly I knew I had to go to the altar and lay my sins down before God. I honestly don't remember leaving the pew or walking down the aisle, but I do remember the feeling of cleansing! I was cleansed, I was free, I was a new being, made new through Christ! A couple of my friends were saved that night too, and we went into the restroom to wash the tears from our faces, and we just rejoiced together. And that night I didn't want to go to sleep, I was so afraid the feeling would go away. But to this day, that feeling hasn't left me! His mercy is new every morning! Blessings sweetie, Becky

  16. That is awesome!! I was about a year younger when I prayed to receive Christ and it was the day that Mt. St. Helens blew it's top. There was ash coming down in the little town of Montana that I lived in at the time.

    Happy Birthday girl. :)

Love that I'm gonna see you in Heaven.

  17. what a sweet momma you have! happy birthday!!

  18. Every time something wonderful happens, I hope with all my heart that I won't forget... :) Thank goodness our God is patient with us!

  19. thanks for the comments today on my sweet of you!
and what a sweet story you shared...just love reading your blog!

  20. Yes, I do! My husband (then boyfriend) and I had been meeting with a young pastor, doing a Bible study. Neither of us had made a commitment to the Lord at that time. We were simply getting questions answered. It was New Years Eve, 1990 and we had just been intimate. As we layed there talking, I asked him if he thought God was unhappy with what we had just done, especially since we were not married. He said, "Yes, I believe God is extremely sad right now." I was overcome with grief and remorse. We both experienced a change in our hearts that night. We decided to get married and we decided to remain apart until then. I specifically gave my life to Jesus that night and have not looked back. Rick had already and used that opportunity for repentence. It turned into a beautiful celebration of renewal and new beginnings!

Happy Birthday to you, Sister in Faith!

  21. What a wonderul memory. Happy Spiritual birthday to you. :)

I wish that I had a memory to share with you but I don't. Thank you for sharing yours.

  22. Happy Best Birthday we can have! So glad we're in this family. So neat that you have that paper - that is really special. At 8 I understood I wanted God's love and never to be separated from it and accepted Christ as my Savior. In 2003, after tons of odds and ends behind me - God got my attention big time and since has been the most complex, challenging and wonderful stuff EVER in my relationship with God (Jehovah) the Father, through Yeshua - Christ my savior. God is faithful. AMEN!

  23. wow! what a story... and that piece of paper!
    hAppY biRthdAy indeed!

you know... i don't recall much of my young childhood... however... i do recall at summer camp feeling the Holy Spirit for the first time... it was an amazing experience to know... feel... He was right there with me.
it was tangible. something i will never forget.
i am so very thankful my relationship with Him is always there... He is always with me.

    love to you!!!!!

  24. not sure how i came upon your blog, but happy birthday! i was also saved at the kitchen table with my mom right beside me. so great you have a picture and a note! happy, happy birthday, eat some cake!

  25. What an awesome treasure to have that paper! I remember asking my mom one time also. I was 5 but I remember it clearly. (not the date though)

  26. I just love that your mom had the wisdom to write it down and make it concrete for you. Great post. Mine is on Easter. I'll never forget it. I was 21.

  27. I just love your heart!
I am thanking God for you and the gift of encouragement that you have. What a very special thing to have an earthly treasure to remind you of your heavenly gift. What agreat mom you have.
I was 8 years old, watching a children's evangelist draw chalk drawings. I went forward at the end of the service. While I was praying for my salvation I heard Jesus tell me I was going to be a missionary... Here I am 38 years later in Poland. We have lived in Bulgaria and Africa as well.
What an adventure! Never a dull moment with Him.
    Happy Birthday,

  28. that is so wonderful of you to be sharing christ's love with others.

hope you have a very happy new year~

  29. My new birthday is December 17th, 1998. I remember it like it was yesterday!! I remember coming out of the water of baptism knowing that I was changed forever! I wish I had become a Christian earlier...but that would not of been the story God had for me. :) And...what a story it has been so far. Have a fantastic day!!!

  30. what a sweet memory and momento! I grew up in church and remember asking Jesus into my heart on more that one occasion. I wanted to be a 'good girl' and I was fairly successful in that, always had 'what would Jesus do' echoing in the back of my head....
It wasn't until college that I had a real heart understanding of His immesurable GRACE and how he required my WHOLE heart devoted to Him above all other life pursuits and desires. He was more interested in my heart attitude toward him than what I did or didn't do (although he did care about those things too).

  31. I LOVED this! I sometimes wish I had a specific time to look back on, but having grown up in Church my entire life, I think it was a long process of me truly realizing what it meant to be saved as an individual, apart from my family. If that makes any sense! I don't remember any specific dates, but I do remember the seasons in my life where God revealed Himself to me.
Thanks for sharing this, I so look forward to rejoicing with you in Heaven one day. :)

  32. I love that your mom wrote it on a piece of paper! What a sweet mama you have! Happy spiritual Birthday!!

  33. Happy Birthday:) I love this so much and I can't wait to do it for my kids... This is the sweetest thing. I don't remember when I asked Jesus to come into my heart but I do remember the exact moment I decided to ask him back into my heart after an adolescence away from Him... I was 21 and I was stubborn. I was angry and confused and questioning my dad about the existence of God. I'm not sure why but my dad asked me this little question and for some reason it stuck and cord in me that changed my life forever. He said, "Baby, why are you fighting against God?" After that my life was changed and happier than ever.

  34. Praise our heavenly Father for giving His Son Jesus. I surrendered my life to Him in November of 1998. I was baptized on the 15th at the age of 16. He drew me in when I was at such an influential age. I was running in the complete wrong direction. Praise His Holy Name for caring for me enough to stop me in my tracks.
Every year I look forward to that day and watch the mail for an encouraging card from the minister who baptized me. Thank you for sharing this special day in your journey and prompting me to remember mine. Blessings to you. Love in Christ, Barbara
