Competing against the World

My friend's husband Aaron is a marathon runner. He told me a statistic that I found very interesting. Apparently 80% of the world's population cannot run 3 miles without stopping. Now to the average person this stat would not be that exciting, but to me I was ecstatic. You see I can RUN 3 miles without stopping. I am in the 20%...wow!! What incredible motivation to get on the treadmill and kick butt:)

Whether you can run 5 miles or just run to the mailbox...I encourage you to push yourself. We can do more than we think we can. It's great to have a goal to stretch for. Now I wonder what other little statistics out there would be a self esteem booster??

  1. I can't run to the end of the block without stopping, but then again, I haven't tried...might not be able to make it to the end of the driveway. ;)

  2. Maybe you should try to run a marathon...I love doing them. I run and walk most of it but I can run over 5 miles without stopping!

  3. I haven't run for years. Hated it at school and probably wouldn't be much of a fan of it now! Now swimming on the other hand...

  4. This is a motivation for me. I did a 1/2 marathon last October (and had not trained properly for it). I want to do one again this October, but I am not ready for it. I am signing up for it anyway. If that doesn't get my butt moving, nothing will.

  6. i've run a leg of a marathon but can't imagine running the whole thing...it really amazes me.
    my running pals want me to do a half marathon this fall. i'm definitely not ready at this point.
    maybe your stat will get me pumped up too...

  8. I hadn't heard that stat before! I haven't tried recently...but I at least USED to be in the 20%! I am REALLY looking forward to getting back home and stepping it back up again! Thank you for the motivation!

  9. That IS awesome...I'm not there yet, but working on it. I'm on week 3 of the "couch to 5K" program to work on my endurance. Your blog just adds to my motivation.

  10. Yeah!! I was a runner before I started homeschooling and traded early morning runs for late evening swimming... Then I went and had a pedicure and they took out this awful cheese grater tool and shaved off all my running calouses!! I bet I could still do three miles though. Maybe I'll have to test that theory this weekend before we hike!

    Better stock up on Red Bull first.


  11. I love the motivation in pushing yourself! I wasn't very active until a little over a hear ago, I've found a work out class called Turbo Kick that I LOVE! Anyways.....I'm starting to teach it, my first class is this saturday! So that is how I'm pushing myself farther than I ever thought I could go!

    Love the post! Very inspiring :) Although I don't htink I'm in the elite 20% :)

  12. I live in Washington! It's wet and rainy here most of the time... except for right now when it's so stinkin' hot and I have no air conditioning!

  13. Yeah, it kind of seems like that doesn't it? I think the rain drives us to our computers for solace. (snicker)

    I've been everywhere. I grew up in Montana, my dad was a preacher of tiny country churches and we moved around a LOT between my 7th grade and high school, roaming up into Canada even. It was horrible but I'm a bit of a social butterfly, so I managed. And then I met my sweetie and began dating between Junior and Senior years, and I was a goner after that. He had me at hello, and I was done. I think it was the brown eyes, the sweet heart for God, and the muscles in one nicely wrapped package.

    I feel like we need to exchange actual emails... (you can say no if you want to...) just saying is all...


  14. That's so neat to be in the 20%, good for you! I do enjoy running but haven't found a way past the shin splints. :( So it's walking for me. Hey, I can walk fast for 3 miles without stopping, does that count for anything?! lol

  16. I used to run everywhere as a kid, down the block, up the alley that joined our streets, to the corner store to pick up milk for Mom. Now I have a treadmill and it sets loaded down with toys waiting for Grandkids to come. Shame on me, I need to get on and walk my blues away!

  17. That's a great stat! I run everyday (about 3.5) and stop twice in my route, but can do it w/o stopping, if needed. I think this is AWESOME motivation and I wish I could do a triathlon. I'm thinking about it and learning more about the ones in our area. And I guess I need a nice little stat to help me! :)

  20. I am definitely part of the 80% that canNOT do that but I am in awe of people that can. I do want to push myself to walk more and walk farther and faster. I usually walk with the hubs and our dog but I can't really talk to him...I have to keep talking to myself to get through it and do a little more, just a little more.... :-)
